EDITING
AIM: I will be analysing and illustrating the editing in three music videos and how these videos have influenced my own.
DEFINITION: Editing arranges a narrative temporally both in the making and the viewing of the film. There are three main editing forms:
-the long take:
-montage: editing that creates meaning through placing different images next to one another.
-continuity editing: Editing that creates action that flows smoothly across shots and scenes without jarring visual inconsistencies. Establishes a sense of story for the viewer.

MUSIC VIDEO 1
STRESS BY JUSTICE
This video uses continuity editing, although the overall majority is the use of montage/jump cuts. These jump cuts help show the extreme chaos of the scene. The camera men within the music video are having to keep up with the events and this brings the audience directly into the chaos. This leaves the audience in a position in which they have to decide and attempt to understand the reality of what social issues Europe are facing. It is almost asthough the video has been saturated and graded down to look black and white which could be another example of the use of binary opposition to show the two different sides, views and opinions of the North African youths who are in a gang illustrated by the crosses that are on their backs and the rest of Paris who are represented in three different places they attack.
MUSIC VIDEO 2
A TEAM BY ED SHEERAN
The music video was filmed using both hand held and static camera’s, this displays the documentary style in which it has been filmed. Continuity editing is used, to help the video to flow. Jump cuts have also been edited in to show the fact that her decisions in life have had big effects on her, in such a small space of time. One of the inital effects that are used throughout the video is the black and white effect, which connotes the feelings of the main character in this video (depressed and helpless).
Some of the shots towards the middle of the video have been sped up into a time lapse, for example: when she is sat on the street floor, people walk up and down the street taking no notice of her. This shows that people who past by move quickly and have places to go, which contrast to the young girl who does not move position. None of the publics faces are shown, which highlights the fact that the young girl cant identify with anyone. Whilst it also shows the fact that the girl is letting the opportunities she sees pass by, but also the fact that she is lonely and has got nothing to live for.

FEATHERSTONE BY THE PAPER KITES
The type of editing that is mostly used within the music video of Featherstone by the Paperkites is the use of jumpcuts. These jumpcuts include a number of different long shots, medium shots and closeups. The camera usually begins at a lower level to show the characters feet, and then begins to rise to show the rest of the characters costumes. The camera constantly follows the children in a medium tracking shot to clearly show their movement and surroundings that they are in. The close ups within the music video help show the characters facial expressions, and also creates a relationship between them and the audience.
THE INFLUENCE ON MY OWN MUSIC VIDEO
Our music video 'Not At Home' consists of continuity editing and montage. Like 'Featherstone' by The Paperkites, the use of jumpcuts help show the different surroundings that the characters are in. We feel all the music videos editing styles have influenced our own. Although I personally feel 'Stress' by Justice and 'Featherstone' by The Paperkites have had an extreme influence, due to their fluid continuity. We hope that the continuity editing within our music video flows so that the verisimilitude is clearly maintained. In our own video we are aiming to follow the story of two siblings and we feel continuity editing will work well, in order to show the constant move of location.
