SOUND
In this section I will be analysing the sound within three music videos.
Sound refers to what you hear within the video. Sound is categorised into two sections:
-diegetic: which is the sound from the reality of the scene
-non diegetic: something only the audience can hear and is overlaid in post production

MUSIC VIDEO 1
STRESS BY JUSTICE
Xavier de Rosnay (left) and Gaspard Augé (right)
In the music video there is the use of both diegetic and non diegetic sound. The non diegetic being the actual song, which is of the genre of techno house by french duo Justice. This type of music helps with the pace and feel of the video. Although there is also the use of diegetic sound. To create a documentary style of video the director uses the diegetic sound of people talking. The audience is the in a position where they are experiencing the violence with real sounds of the scene, but also the violence within the song. Even though this is a music video, the diegetic sound highlights the fact that this violence is actually happening.
MUSIC VIDEO 2
A TEAM BY ED SHEERAN
Ed Sheeran
The song to this video is sang and written by 22 year old musician, Ed Sheeran. The genre of his music would either come under acoustic or alternative chill. The diegetic noises in this video have been muted, and so only the non diegetic sound is heard. I think this was because they wanted the focus of the audience to be on the young girl and so they would understand the importance of her story.
MUSIC VIDEO 3
FEATHERSTONE BY THE PAPERKITES
The Paperkites
Featherstone by the Paperkites is the only sound that is heard throughout the video. The genre of this non diegetic sound is indie/folk. This helps set the pace, as the actual video has been slowed down. Towards the end of the music video, the song builds up with the use of drums. This begins to play, as soon as the pillow fight commences. This highlights the joy and excitement.
THE INFLUENCE ON OUR MUSIC VIDEO
Our music video only uses non diegetic sound. We played along our footage to the song 'Not at Home' by Peter Broderick. The song constantly refers to the fact that there is no home, which we felt suited our theme extremely well. Even though its played throughout the whole music video, the audience only realise this at the end, as the costumes and locations help keep this theme hidden. We also felt the song was quite despondent, and so we wanted to juxtapose this with the sweet relationship the girls shared. 'The A Team' and 'Featherstone' both only used non diegetic sound. I felt this was extremely effective as this made the audience understand and realise the importance of the story. Even though 'Stress' by Justice didn't influenced us much in terms of their sound, I did personally feel it worked extremely well to get their point across. As their music video was much more violent, I felt the diegetic sound helped put this across to the audience even more, and also created a clearer verisimilitude.
