MISE EN SCENE
AIM: I will be analysing and illustrating the Mise En Scene within three music videos and how these music videos have influenced the narrative of my own.
Mise En Scene is the arrangement of everything that appears in the framing, and refers to the composition of the shot. You clearly look into the movement of the characters, the lighting, the choices of location and costumes.
Mise En Scene usually adverts to the visual surroundings, and gives the audience spacial awareness and communicates to them where the characters are and whom they are with.

LIGHTING: The natural lighting used, gives us a reflection of real life. This also suggests a low budget, but also a documentary style. This creates a verisimilitude for the viewers, creating a more realistic and believable scene.
COSTUME: They all wear matching leather jackets bearing the Justice stylised logo - a cross which justifies their collective identity. They are representing youths as a whole. The costumes helps establish the clear division between the social groups, the youths wearing the justice jackets, the public and the film makers who document the events in the film.

LOCATION: The music videos location is not entirely distinguishable as Paris rather, you can recognise the location as Europe. This highlights the fact, that the music video is trying to show that this aggressive and social problem is happening all over Europe, not just in the centre of France. They start the video in the suburbs and start moving towards the city, involving themselves in violent activity towards the tourists in central France and then turn on the film makers themselves.
MUSIC VIDEO 2
A TEAM BY ED SHEERAN
COSTUME: The protagonist of this video is a young girl, about 18 year old. She is wearing ripped tights and also a mans coat which is too big for her. Along with this she has thick make up on which suggests she has been trying anything for money. The other characters in the video are members of the public. They are of different ethnicities and are dressed in smart clothing - creating a binary opposition between them and the main character, also creating status.
LIGHTING: The lighting is very natural all the way through the video which makes it realistic. Although it was probably enhanced in post production, as the shots are now in black and white. A documentary style of filming was being expressed through the use of natural lighting. There is also a binary opposition in terms of the lighting and the colour. The dark colours of the streets juxtaposes with the protagonists face which makes her look pale and slightly angelic.

PERFORMANCE: The young girl in this video seems to carry round a sleeping bag, indicating that she is vulnerably housed. This is also highlighted through the situations she is put through and also the locations she is seen in, (bench, street floor).
|
LOCATION: This music video was filmed in Angel, in north London, and Camden, in the northwest. The majority of the video is on location and shot outside. Although there are some areas in the video which are filmed indoors, these indoor locations show flats in which the girl is in contact with class A drugs. Instead of the protagonist using these indoor locations to stay away from the danger on the streets she instead chooses to find comfort in drugs and prostitution.
Also when it comes to much smaller locations such as the bedroom, it creates a sense of intimacy between the protagonist and the audience. It also allows the audeince to empathize with her on an emotional level, and allows the lyrics to have as greater impact. |
MUSIC VIDEO 3
FEATHERSTONE BY THE PAPER KITES
PERFORMANCE: In this music video, there are kids living in a community in the forest, showing childhood and how children should move away from playing on computers and go back to playing and enjoying the outdoors. The children walk in line one by one, to join another group of children in a pillow fight at the end of the music video. This reinforces the idea of freedom and youthfulness.
LOCATION: The music video is located in a forrest. The tall trees surround the children and make them appear smaller than they are. I feel the forrest represents a reality for the children, full of surprise, adventure and excitement. Although, it is often seen as a dangerous place, filled with conflict and trouble. This point isnt entirely considered in this video.
|
COSTUME: The tribal theme and costumes are attractive to the eye and camouflage with nature, this shows how humans are intertwined. The costumes are similar to those you would find in the movie and children's book 'Where the Wild things are'. This helps highlight the youthfulness of the video. The fact that all the young children are wearing similar costumes, help establish their collective identity.
LIGHTING: No production lighting is used within this music video, only natural. This usually is used to give the sense of real life, although this contrasts with the unrealistic theme/costumes. Even though the lighting is natural, there is also a lot of lens flearing and juxtapositions between shadows and light. This makes it look like a memory/dream.

THE INFLUENCE ON MY OWN MUSIC VIDEO
The lighting, costume, locations and performance of these music videos have had influence in the planning and making of my own.
PERFORMANCE: Our intention for this was to have the characters doing normal, everyday activities. Throughout our music video the characters are seen smiling and having a laugh together. This is very different to the attitudes that the main characters in the other videos have towards life. We wanted to contrast these attitudes, by producing a more positive message to highlight the importance of their situation. We wanted to create a bigger impact towards the end of the music video, to show the fact that a book cannot ideally be judged by its cover.
COSTUME: Unlike 'The A Team', the costumes in our music video do not fit the typical idea of homelessness. This was our intention as we wanted the characters to come across as everyday people. The older character is wearing jeans, black tshirt and black shoes. Even though clothes arent typical to the stereotype, she still is seen with a messy bun and a big coat, like the protagonist in 'The A Team'. The young character of Daisy, is seen wearing a white jacket, skirt, tights, fluffly boots and a pink bag. The clothes she wears arent typical to the homelessness stereotype, although I feel the clothes Daisy is wearing, highlights the fact the older character cares enough to spend money on warm clothes for her child to wear. We went against the conventions, to create an impact at the end of the music video.
LIGHTING: Like the videos I analysed, the natural lighting helped establish a verisimilitude. We wanted our music video to look as real as possible, and so the natural lighting helped preserve the realistic feel to strongly describe the social issue of homelessness.
LOCATIONS: The location in which we filmed our final scene, was an abandoned building behind East Ewell Station. This is an example of a location which you would expect homeless people to stay. Although, the way we presented the locations do not give away the fact that they are homeless until the very end. This leaves the audience in a big shock at the end of the music video, when they see these two young characters staying in a run down building. We wanted to highlight the fact that this could happen to anyone and specifically is effecting people who do not fit the stereotype.
